History

The Thorndean is a three-storey Georgian residence built in 1834, located on Inglis Street in Halifax's South End. It is historically valued as a landmark for its visual prominence and social significance, as well as for symbolizing the conservation and re-use of historic buildings in Halifax.

The land was originally purchased in 1786 by Loyalist Jonathan Tremain for a rope walk. His son John built Thorndean in 1834. Ownership later passed to notable figures, including James Forman, a banker involved in an embezzlement scandal, and John S. Maclean, president of the Bank of Nova Scotia. After multiple owners, the Rosinskis acquired the property in 1967 and began extensive restoration efforts, which preserved much of its original character and architectural elements. In 1973, tenants purchased the house and it was converted into five rental units.

Architecturally, Thorndean is a mix of Georgian style with local elements like Scottish dormers, a Greek Revival front door, and an Italianate-style west wing. The property is fronted by a wrought iron fence and features a formal sunken garden with a pool. The building’s preservation has contributed significantly to Halifax’s heritage conservation movement.
